Jewelry

I thought I didn't want to take that jewelry class; one that's required for my Studio Arts degree.  I took the beginner jewelry class last summer because I needed one that wouldn't take much personal time and this required less work than ceremics or painting.  I was very surprised to find out how much fun jewelry and metalsmithing is!  I expected to be frustrated with beads and wires, but eagerly jumped into learning to cut metal and solder pieces together, and set stones.  I took the advance class, and learned to cut and polish rocks to set in my pieces, and I'm hooked!!!

Jewelry class is my favorite, and I spend many hours in the studio learning as many techniques as my professor can teach.  These are a few pieces that I made last semester, soon I hope to have some that are good enough to offer for sale.

Instead of listing my pieces on Etsy, I've started listing them on https://melany-sarafis.pixels.com .   Feel free to follow me there as well.

Woman Veteran Pendant

My woman veteran sillhouette pendants are finally ready!  These are available in my Etsy store (click the image to go to the link).  You can also contact me here and pay by PayPal.  They are sterling silver with a copper hat.  She is 1.5" tall and 1" wide, and comes on a 8 or 10" sterling snake chain.  The pendant has a high shine polish.  I can also add a diamond design on the sleeve (First Sergeants).  Also available is a chevron or a star.

Large unakite stone set in sterling silver pendant with a bunny sillhouette cut out of the back to view the stone from that side.  Pendant including the bail is about 2" tall x 1" wide. The stone is about 3/8" thick.  This is a large - chunky pendant, not a tiny delicate piece of jewelry.
Would look good on a heavy silver chain or collar, or leather coard.

ORGANIC FOLD FORMED COPPER BRACELET

This rugged bracelet started as a sheet of copper, then it was heated and folded (like a sheet of paper!)  The process, called “fold forming” was repeated several times to get the result you see here.  An organic, imperfect hand made ONE OF A KIND work of art!
The bracelet was given a patina to emphasize the textures and folds – which appear on the inside as well as out.

It is coated in Renaissance Wax to help retard tarnish and also keep your skin from turning green (some people turn green simply by touching copper.)  In order to maintain your bracelet, remove it when swimming or showering, and when you return home from your day.  Recoating of wax can be accomplished as needed – you can use Renaissance, Johnsons or even Turtle Wax.  Just like a car “wax on, wax off”.

This bracelet measures 7 ½” around with a 1” gap.  Pulling or squeezing the ends to open or close can adjust it.  It is 1” wide.

This was made from a thin gage copper sheet, resulting in a flexible, light weight bracelet.  Perfect for those with skinny wrists; comfortable yet looks rugged.

Copper Bangles

TEXTURED COPPER BANGLES

These bracelets are hand forged using antique hand made dies. The dies are about 100 years old, created by hand without modern tools - a technique no longer used today - truly "old world" art. The bracelets are made from 6 and 8-gage pure copper wire, each pattern was forged by hand as they were intended to be created. These are not machine stamped bangles; all forging, shaping, soldering, polishing and finishing was done by hand by a US Veteran, made in the USA! Patinas are in a dark gray/copper and a red/gold copper.

Due to the nature of this handmade process, there will be imperfections in the pattern, stamping and shape of the wires. They are truly one of a kind! These are all small in size, made from 7.5 to 8-inch wire; bangles are hard to find for the skinny wristed girls!

I can make larger sizes, and also sterling silver bangles. To find out what size bangle you require, place your fingers and thumb together as if you were putting on a bangle. With a measuring tape, measure the widest part of your hand, you need to know what size circle will fit over your hand without sliding off while wearing the bracelet. 6-gage bracelets will be bulkier/wider than the 8-gage, which will appear more delicate.

These bracelets will look great alone or stacked. I can make larger sizes, and also sterling silver bangles.  They are priced individually, but discounts are available for multiples.

PETROGLYPH INSPIRED CHEST PIECE
Inspired by "the Head Hunter," a petroglyph left by the Freemont People, in what is now the McGonkie Ranch in Vernal Utah. I've always been fascinated with the petroglyphs I see, and I wonder about the stories behind them: who made them, why, who are the people in them, what do they mean, etc. I found a lot of great petroglyphs here and in the Dinosaur National Monument and got a lot of inspiration from them.
This piece is made from a copper plate--hammer textured & formed and patinad with heat--copper wire, and cones from a bald cyprus tree.
